Welton to host Lincolnshire's first CoderDojo in October

Welton Village Library and Community Hub will play host to Lincolnshire’s very first CoderDojo on Tuesday 15th October, between 6pm and 8pm.

CoderDojo is a volunteer-led community providing coding workshops with the aim of getting young people interested in programming. There are nearly 2,000 verified Dojos operating in 93 countries, and this year Lincolnshire is joining the revolution.

Coding affects every aspect of our modern, technology-driven lives. Your phone, TV, bank accounts, hospital appointments, shopping transactions, aeroplanes, every single website you’ve ever visited including the words you are reading right now - all these things are only possible because of code.

Yet coding is a subject which has long been overlooked by the national curriculum, with most IT classes teaching nothing more than the most basic programming languages. As our lives become increasingly dominated by technology, we should at least understand how it all works.

That is the aim of CoderDojo, which introduces young people to coding through fun activities such as making electronic music, building simple robots, creating computer games, making websites and phone apps, all while encouraging attendees to be creative and to work at their own pace in a safe and supportive environment.

Your young CoderDojo Ninja will ideally bring their own laptop along, but there are a small number of bookable laptops at the library, and local business ScholarPack has kindly sponsored some additional electronics and other parts to help you get started.

The session will be led by lifelong technologist and CoderDojo mentor Paul Swift, who will be on hand to provide assistance for anyone who needs it.

CoderDojo events are open to young people between the ages of 7 and 17, and their parents or guardians. Anyone aged 12 or under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the session.

These events are always very popular and there are a limited number of places available, so please sign up soon to avoid disappointment. If you miss out on the first event, don’t worry - you can already book for the second Welton event on 29th October as well!
